10. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (2014)
Playing Advanced Warfare is like seeing the greatest action film you can imagine. In one section, you are carrying out a high-stakes operation to save the President from Camp David, while in another, you are bouncing over trucks and down the Golden Gate Bridge to eliminate enemy concentrations.
It’s a Call of Duty with substance, too: a scathing indictment of private military contractors and the power they can exert. Sadly, the character of Advanced Warfare commander, who is disgraced actor Kevin Spacey, has weakened the moral compass where his real-life downfall has now obscured the rest of the latter betrayal in the game’s storyline.
9. Call of Duty: Vanguard (2021)
Vanguard improves on previous World War 2 Call of Duty games. It introduces a Gunsmith customization system. The game also features impressive destruction mechanics. Players can damage any part of their environment. This applies to both campaign and multiplayer modes.
You enlist with the first special forces unit in history, composed of Nazi-punchers from several countries. You, unfortunately, join them on their last mission. Therefore, most of their story is told via origin tales and flashbacks that are in place long after they get frustrated.
8. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (2020)
I love spy stories, especially the first Call of Duty campaign by Raven which had a mechanical strangeness about them. Some of the best Call of Duty events are found in battles inside places like a Russian recreation of small-town America and solving puzzles in a ’80s safehouse in Berlin.
Unfortunately, the campaign ends too soon and disappears before it has a chance to become popular. This, along with the disappointing multiplayer, is one of the main reasons Black Ops Cold War doesn’t rank higher on the list. Modern Warfare 2019 reinvented the series. Cold War’s multiplayer, in comparison, falls short. It doesn’t match the excitement of the Modern Warfare games.
7. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (2012)
Black Ops 2 has some intense moments. A shootout in a civilian-filled club stands out. The dubstep soundtrack sets the 2012 mood. The game explores America’s covert operations. It also offers a nice mix of different elements, including real-time strategy and narrative branches set in 1986 and 2025. The plot itself is really vile, with some dubious character motives and even Michael Rooker‘s appearance spilling exposition all over the place.
Though the courses combine the old look with the near future, the multiplayer is better for getting rid of the absurd mobility mechanics and including enjoyable high-tech toys like thermal scopes.
6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
A new Call of Duty title by Infinity Ward made it into this list due to its outstanding track record. Following the hugely popular Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare two years before, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from 2009 continued Task Force 141 story globally for another attempt at stopping terrorists. This letdown came with severe and immediate repercussions following one particular mission called “No Russian” where gamers would take part in an airport massacre or otherwise not play along, thus initiating severe backlash against the entire game’s plot.
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)
Black Ops is a worthy successor to the 2007 Modern Warfare and one of the best Call of Duty settings, told through the eyes of various celebrities that make cameo appearances in this release.
The advertising is entertaining, albeit a little jerky. A plot that takes elements from Fight Club throws you between invasions, battles, and assassinations across history with little enough time to catch your breath.
4. Call of Duty 2 (2005)
This name was only used for Infinity Ward’s second ever game (not including console-exclusive spin-offs) – Call of Duty 2 which released in 2005 -, but different characters tell us stories about different WW II fighters. These images might appear obsolete today because they do not conform to contemporary standards, but actually they were way ahead of time; and tells how video games have changed in fifteen years.
3. Call of Duty: Warzone
Activision has already tried their hand at a battle royale game with Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode before Call of Duty: Warzone. But Blackout moved first so Warzone could escape. Released in March 2020, just before the real-world epidemic started, Warzone sought to distinguish itself in the crowded battle royale market by providing something that no other game could. The unequaled “feel” and signature gunplay of Call of Duty was brought to a battle royale environment, where the game flourished.
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
In 2019, Activision revived its highly popular Modern Warfare franchise. However, just like with Modern Warfare in 2007 where Infinity Ward took over as development team, there have since been some changes within the organization.
Among the numerous visually arresting Zero Dark Thirty-style missions and scenes in the campaign was one where you had to play as a little child scuttling around a house as an opponent tried to locate her. It was a terrifying and contentious expedition that, if nothing else, is remembered.
1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)
Our ranking is being dominated by the 2007 shooter from Infinity Ward, and for good reason. The game lifted the franchise out of World War II and positioned it in the present to provide an engrossing, international narrative with many unexpected turns as players fought a terrorist threat on a worldwide scale. The game received accolades for its Hollywood-style, dramatic campaign mode as well as for its more subdued moments; the All Ghillied Up sniper scenario is still a franchise classic.
