5 Things That Dota 2 Does Better Than Other MOBAs

The discussion on which MOBA is better is never going to end. People have their preferences and they like and dislike something or another from each game.

However, we can do a little better than discuss which game is the best. In this article, let us discuss 5 unique things that Dota 2 offers that make it better, more competitive, and more complex than the other MOBAs.

Here’s what Dota 2 does better than other MOBAs:

Unique Laning Phase Mechanics

A couple of the most important things within the laning phase of Dota 2 would have to be blocking and denying creeps.

Did you know? In Dota 2, you can block your lane creeps and make them reach the middle of the lane a lot slower. When done right, this will give you an advantage over your enemy during the laning phase.

Block the creeps just right so that your creeps and the enemy creeps meet somewhere close to your tower, but not so close that your tower starts killing the enemy creeps. Fighting under the protection of your tower puts you at an advantage.

Blocking creeps can be done both by body-blocking or by using spells like Earthshaker’s Fissure or Clockwerk’s Power Cogs.

Denying a creep is another unique mechanic in Dota 2. When your allied creep is low on health, you can kill it by getting the last hit on it. This denies gold and experience to the enemy laner. Hence the name “Denying.”

Actually Free-to-Play

Unlike other MOBAs, Dota 2 is completely free to play—you don’t have to spend anything to unlock heroes. All heroes, by default, are unlocked for all players, and there is no concept of unlocking heroes in this game at all.

Though other games call themselves F2P, they have locked heroes, which you have to buy with experience points or real money. Depending on the hero, it sometimes becomes pay-to-win. Luckily, in Dota 2, there is no such concept; every player has an equal advantage.

Better Skin/Cosmetics System

The skin system in Dota 2 is way ahead of other MOBAs. Dota 2 drops skins and bundles to players. Even an F2P player will get these drops from time to time. Moreover, you can trade these skins on the community market.

In most other games, you’re stuck with a skin for the rest of your life. But in Dota 2, you can trade, buy or sell skins on the Steam market.

Along with amazing skins for heroes, Dota 2 lets you customize your HUD, creeps, wards, and even the world like towers, terrain, effigies, etc.

Dota 2 also has amazing courier skins, custom audio for announcers and music, custom loading screens, emoticons, cursor packs and so much more! So it is safe to say that when it comes to skins and cosmetics, nobody can beat Dota 2.

Interactive and a Better User Interface

The UI on Dota is another unique and helpful mechanic in the game. Yes, all other MOBAs also have UI but what makes Dota 2’s better is the few unique things it offers.

Dota 2 offers an in-game guide system for all heroes. You can find up-to-date guides without the need to go to any other site or app to find them.

You can ping an enemy hero “missing” or “returned” by simply clicking on the hero portrait on the top of the UI, but a little-known fact is that you can use that same portrait to aggro creeps.

When you do not see an enemy hero in your lane and want to aggro creeps, you can execute an attack command on a hero’s portrait, and the creeps will get aggro’d, provided the enemy is visible on the minimap.

Speaking of minimap, you can also draw stuff on it. You can use this mechanic to call strategies, mark ward locations for your support, etc. But most players use it for different reasons, if you know you know!

Custom Games

Did you know? Dota started as a custom map inside a game called Warcraft III. Dota by itself wasn’t a standalone game until the release of Dota 2! The people working for Dota know how important it is to let the community come up with their own custom games.

Dota 2 allows its community to create custom maps and mini-games that can be played inside the game itself. Games like Tower Defense, boss fights, pudge wars, and even auto chess, which became a separate game later, are all part of the custom games.

In all other MOBAs, you can either play the standard version of the game or a couple of other game modes made by the developers themselves. But when it comes to Dota, you have so many fun modes to try, and you too can make a custom game of your own.

I feel that giving a free hand to the community and allowing them to make such custom games plays a huge role in keeping the game alive and nobody knows it better than Valve.
