Black Myth Wukong Review

Like in most games, you start with a cool introduction, and let me tell you, the visuals of this game are amazing!

With no time wasted, you will be introduced to a few main characters, learn a little bit about the plot, and jump right into combat. I know how eagerly everyone is waiting to try out the combat system in this game.

This first fight is also the tutorial for combat in this game. Make sure to pay attention while you’re playing it.

Is the Black Myth: Wukong Combat System Good?

For starters, it has everything you expect it to have. There’s light attack, heavy attack, dodge, and spells. There is also something called stances, which he will further expand upon.

During your first combat, you will be introduced to three spells: Rock Solid, Immobilize, and A Pluck of Many.

For everyone wondering if Black Myth Wukong has Parry, the “Rock Solid” spell is the game’s version of Parry. Use it to turn yourself into a stone and if the enemy attacks you while you’re in rock form, they’re staggered.

Immobilize,” as the name suggests, is a simple hand gesture or spell that can bind the enemy in their place, and “A Pluck of Many” is the iconic Wukong spell that summons multiple clones of himself!

Keep in mind that these are the spells you have in the introduction fight and you won’t have them once the actual gameplay starts. You have to progress through the game to find them.

Stances are an interesting mechanic in this game. There are three stances: the smash stance, the pillar stance, and the thrust stance. You can switch between these to choose between damage, a combination of offense and defense, or a combination of damage with range, etc.

And like in most games, there are health, mana, and stamina bars. There is also shapeshifting combat, which you might’ve seen in the trailers and I won’t be spoiling anything about it; you must experience that yourself.

My verdict is clear: the combat system of Black Myth Wukong is amazing and it is a 10/10 from me; no complaints.

Is Black Myth: Wukong Soulslike?

In a way, there are definitely elements similar to those in Souls games. The healing system, the dodge mechanic, the XP system, tons of bosses, and a lot more make this game similar to the Souls genre.

The healing gourd, pellets and a few more items in this game will remind you of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

While the developers, GameScience themselves, do not consider the game to be soulslike, the combat system and the wide variety of bosses and their movesets will definitely give you the feeling of playing a soulslike game.

And when it comes to difficulty, from the initial gameplay, the difficulty of Black Myth: Wukong feels more like the God of War games than the Souls games. But again, this game has a style of its own and definitely feels refreshing.

Is Black Myth Wukong Open World?

Unfortunately, Black Myth: Wukong is not an open-world game. There is not much scope for you to explore the world freely but the side quests are good!

Linear games that have a predetermined path and open-world games that give you the freedom to go anywhere have fans of their own, and the fact that you can skip bosses, get strong, and come back any other time in Elden Ring is probably the best way to design a game; it’s completely my personal opinion!

However, the beautiful and dynamic world of Black Myth Wukong is a class of its own. It has really great, stunning visuals, strong bosses from Chinese mythology, and definitely a unique and refreshing combat system.

If there’s just one game you can pick up, my recommendation would be 100% Black Myth: Wukong!
