There are lots of Pokemon to find in Pokemon GO, but which are the rarest of them all and how do you even get them? Some are from past events that make them nearly impossible to find, while others you can still get right now after lots of work!
Celebi
Celebi is not only rare, but it can even become an even rarer Shiny Pokemon too. The only way to get this Pokemon is by completing the Special Research Story associated with it in 2021. While you can still play through this story now, you cannot earn Celebi from it anymore which makes this Pokemon a rare sight and prize for veteran players.
Keldeo
Keldeo is another Pokemon that was locked behind a limited-time Research Story event. The difference here though is that Keldeo was actually put behind a paywall during the Mythical Blades event specifically. Players who did not pay the ticket needed would not have had the chance to get this Keldeo which arguably makes it rarer than Celebi.
Zarude
Zarude is another Pokemon that was locked behind a paywall in the past. In 2021 there was a Research Story event that you could pay to find a Zarude during a mission. It has reappeared once again to give players more of a chance to get one, but who knows if that will ever happen again. While it may not be as rare as Keldeo due to its reappearance, it is still a hard find to this day.
Jirachi
Jirachi debuted out of a Pokemon GO festival back in 2019. Any player who decided to participate in it at the time was able to get a chance at capturing a Jirachi in its designated research quest. Luckily, Jirachi got a feature in the 2023 Masterwork Festival event. This makes Jirachi much less rare due to her recent event last year, but still a missed opportunity for lots of players.
Pikachu Libre
This is less of a whole Pokemon being rare on its own but rather a costume instead. The Pikachu Libre costume specifically is adorable but is very difficult to get. One must achieve the Legend Rank in the Pokemon GO Battle League. This is hard due to each season resetting your rank status but getting it will let other players know how much of a true Pokemon Master you are.
Frigibax
At first, Frigibax doesn’t seem that hard to find and capture as it spawns in the wild and can hatch from eggs. However, its chances of doing so seem to be at an all-time low for most players in the Pokemon GO community as many declare rarely if ever see one let alone a couple. While this Pokemon is more possible than the ones closed behind events, it’s still a grind to get.
Gholdengo
This Pokemon is infamous for being both hard to find and having a lot of steps to have a chance at catching. First, your Pokemon GO account must be linked with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. After that, you must get 999 Gimmighoul Coins by using Golden Lures which is a huge and time-consuming grind that is easy to give up on. This will cause the Gholdengo to spawn and any player who has one will have proved their hardcore dedication to the game.
Gholdengo is also known to be very challenging to catch, let alone fight. In past Pokemon games, they were infamous for both being quick to escape, but also have very high rewards which makes sense since they are made out of pure gold. In Pokemon GO, not much is known about just how many players have managed to catch one, so there is little evidence of it. However, they are still in Pokedex ready to be caught.
Larvesta
Larvesta is a Pokemon that requires hatching lots and lots of eggs. It is known to be one of if not the rarest Pokemon to be hatched by an egg so getting is a humongous achievement and best of luck for any player. Even if you do manage to get one, its evolution is even rarer as it will require getting about 400 Larvesta Candies. Good luck!
Celesteela
Celesteela is unique in the fact that not only is this Pokemon a Raid boss that can be captured but it can only be fought in Southern Hemisphere regions. This Pokemon is at a 5-Star level too which makes it a lot rarer and more difficult to defeat. The only way to experience this boss is if you live in the Southern Hemisphere or simply set your location there. If you ever travel there too, you might just have a shot at it.
Kartana
Kartana is essentially the Northern Hemisphere version of Celesteela. This Pokemon can also be found during Raids as an Ultra Beast only in the Northern Hemisphere regions. It is also a 5-Star boss so it might take a while for newer players to be able to take a Kartana on but is well worth doing so when you can.
Sandile
Sandile is an adorable Pokemon that is loved by all, but they are incredibly rare in Pokemon GO. This is another Pokemon that is primarily found through hatching a bunch of eggs. Most players that hatch eggs often rarely ever run into one if at all, so consider yourself very lucky if you manage to get your hands on this cutie.
Unown
Unown is still available during most current events in Pokemon GO but that doesn’t make them any less rare or valuable. During a tour event, that is the primary time when you could run into an Unown to capture.
